Manage firm members and access

Everyone on your firm's member list can use the dashboard, cases, messages, document requests, and agents. Invites, roles, and per-case access all live in two places: Settings for the firm, and each case's Settings for assignments and restrictions.

Invite a teammate

Under Settings → Firm members, owners and admins press Invite teammate, enter the email, and pick an Access level — Member or Admin. The invite arrives by email; the teammate signs in from the link, reviews the user terms, and joins. Until then the invite sits under Pending invites, where Cancel stops the link from working.

What the roles mean

• Owner — everything, plus the things only owners can touch: firm details and the firm logo.
• Admin — team management, templates, and the Subscription, alongside normal case work.
• Member — full case work: cases, messages, documents, tasks, updates.

Separately, each member can carry a legal role — Attorney, Paralegal, Legal assistant, Billing, Partner, or Other. These are organizational labels used in assignment lists; they don't change what anyone can access.

Assign cases and pick a lead

Each case's Settings → Assignments lists who's explicitly on the case. Assignees always have access to the case, and one can be marked Set as lead — the person responsible for the case beyond any single task. Assignments also drive the "Me" lens on the Cases and Tasks screens, so keeping them current keeps everyone's queue honest.

Restrict a sensitive case

Restricted access in case Settings limits reading to explicit assignees plus firm owners and admins — use it when a client asks for confidentiality. The restriction is enforced in the database, not just hidden in the interface. If members hold open tasks on the case without being assignees, BetterDocket lists them before restricting and offers to promote them to assignees or restrict anyway.

Remove someone

From the member list's ⋯ menu, Remove ends their access to client cases, messages, and documents; you can re-invite later. Owners can't be removed this way, and you can't remove yourself.
