Services · Running the firm

Books that close every month, without you doing them.

Law firm books have their own shape: retainers that are not income yet, client costs advanced and recovered, fee splits, and a trust account that must never be confused with operating money. Generic bookkeepers get this wrong, and the fix lands on your CPA in April. We keep the operating books monthly, reconcile every account, and hand your CPA a year end that needs no cleanup.

Who this is for

Sound familiar?

  • A solo who has been doing the books in a spreadsheet, or not at all.
  • A small firm whose bookkeeper does not understand retainers, advanced costs, or trust.
  • A firm that cannot answer “how did we do last month?” without a week of work.

What is included

The scope of the engagement.

Monthly close

Every transaction categorized, every account reconciled, and the month closed by a fixed date, with accounting software set up for a law practice if you do not have it.

Law-firm chart of accounts

Retainers, earned fees, advanced client costs, reimbursements, and referral fees tracked the way your CPA and your bar expect.

Invoices and receivables

Issued invoices and recorded payments matched to the books, with an aging report so you know who owes what. If you invoice from BetterDocket, those records flow straight in.

Monthly reports

Profit and loss, balance sheet, cash position, and receivables, with a short note on anything unusual. Readable in five minutes.

How it works

From consultation to handoff.

  1. Review

We look at your current books, bank setup, and invoicing, and tell you what is sound and what needs cleanup.

  2. Plan and quote

A one-time cleanup fee if needed, then a flat monthly fee sized to your transaction volume.

  3. Setup and cleanup

Accounting software configured for a law firm, bank feeds connected, and prior months brought current.

  4. Monthly rhythm

You answer a handful of questions a month. We do the rest and send the reports.

On the platform

Where this hands off into BetterDocket.

The software is a separate subscription and never required. Firms that use it get these handoffs out of the box.

Time and invoicing

Log time on the Case, turn it into a clear client invoice with due-date reminders, and record payments without moving money through BetterDocket.

A short consultation, then a written scope and a number. No retainer, no long-term contract, and nothing starts until you approve it.

BetterDocket is not a law firm, a CPA firm, or an insurance agency, and nothing on this page is legal, tax, or insurance advice. Where a service requires a licensed professional, that work is performed by a licensed professional in your state, either on our team or through a partner we vet. Every engagement is scoped and quoted after a consultation.

Questions.

Does this include the trust account?

Trust accounting is a separate, stricter service with its own three-way reconciliation. Most firms bundle the two, and the quote shows them separately so you can see what each costs.

What software do you use?

Whichever mainstream accounting software you already use, set up correctly for a law firm. If you have none, we recommend one and set it up in your name so the books are always yours.

Does it work with BetterDocket invoicing?

Yes. Invoices issued and payments recorded in BetterDocket are matched into the books each month, so the invoice your client saw and the revenue in your reports agree.

Who actually does the work?

The BetterDocket team delivers most of this work directly: the technology, web, and search work by the engineers who build the product, and the bookkeeping, tax, and payroll work by the CPA on our team. When a service requires a license we do not hold, or our team is at capacity, we bring in a vetted partner and stay your single point of contact.

What does it cost?

Every engagement is scoped and quoted after a short consultation, and most are flat fees so you know the number before work starts. Ongoing services, such as bookkeeping or SEO, are quoted monthly with no long-term contract.
