Services · Growing the firm

Know what the firm is actually making.

Past the first year, the question changes from “are the books done?” to “which work is worth doing?” Most small firms cannot answer it: billing lives in one system, the books in another, and nobody has connected them or decided what to measure. We design the financial stack, wire it together, and then read the numbers with you every month: profitability by practice area and timekeeper, realization and collection rates, cash forecasting, and budget against actual. Bookkeeping records what happened. This is the layer that tells you what to do about it.

Who this is for

Sound familiar?

  • A firm with clean books that still cannot say which practice area makes money.
  • Partners who settle compensation, pricing, or hiring questions on gut feel.
  • A firm whose billing, payments, and accounting systems have never been connected.

What is included

The scope of the engagement.

Systems design and implementation

Accounting, billing, and payment systems chosen for a law practice, set up in your name, and connected so an invoice, a payment, and a ledger entry agree without re-keying. If you run on BetterDocket, invoicing flows in directly.

Metrics that matter for a firm

Realization, collection, utilization, and write-offs by practice area and timekeeper, defined once and measured the same way every month.

Forecast and budget

A rolling cash forecast and an annual budget, compared against actuals each month so surprises show up early instead of in April.

Monthly review

A one-page report and a call to go through it: what moved, why, and the one or two decisions it points to. Fractional CFO work without the full-time salary.

How it works

From consultation to handoff.

  1. Assessment

Your current systems, the reports you get today, and the questions you cannot answer with them.

  2. Plan and quote

A one-time implementation fee and a flat monthly fee for the reporting and the review.

  3. Implementation

Systems connected, metrics defined, and the first reports built from your real history so you can see the baseline.

  4. Monthly rhythm

Report delivered, review call held, decisions logged, and the forecast updated.

A short consultation, then a written scope and a number. No retainer, no long-term contract, and nothing starts until you approve it.

BetterDocket is not a law firm, a CPA firm, or an insurance agency, and nothing on this page is legal, tax, or insurance advice. Where a service requires a licensed professional, that work is performed by a licensed professional in your state, either on our team or through a partner we vet. Every engagement is scoped and quoted after a consultation.

Questions.

How is this different from bookkeeping?

Bookkeeping records transactions and closes the month. This service designs the systems the bookkeeping runs on and turns the closed books into decisions: which work is profitable, who is collecting, and how much cash the next quarter needs. Most firms pair the two.

Does BetterDocket hold or move money?

No. We set up and connect your systems and read the numbers. The accounts, the payments, and the decisions stay yours.

Do I need to switch software?

Usually not. We work with mainstream accounting, billing, and payment tools and recommend a change only when something cannot be connected or cannot report what you need. Everything stays in your name.

Is this tax or investment advice?

No. The analysis is about how your firm operates. Tax positions go through the CPA and tax service, and personal or investment decisions are outside what we do.

Who actually does the work?

The BetterDocket team delivers most of this work directly: the technology, web, and search work by the engineers who build the product, and the bookkeeping, tax, and payroll work by the CPA on our team. When a service requires a license we do not hold, or our team is at capacity, we bring in a vetted partner and stay your single point of contact.

What does it cost?

Every engagement is scoped and quoted after a short consultation, and most are flat fees so you know the number before work starts. Ongoing services, such as bookkeeping or SEO, are quoted monthly with no long-term contract.
