Services · Starting the firm

A firm's technology, set up once and written down.

A new firm needs an email address that is not Gmail, a phone number that is not your cell, somewhere safe to keep documents, a backup, and a handful of security settings that stop the most common ways small firms get breached. None of it is complicated, all of it is tedious, and most of it is set up slightly wrong by default. We do it in an afternoon, in your name, and leave you a one-page description of how it all fits together. This is the work closest to our day job: BetterDocket is built by software engineers, and the people who set up your firm's technology are the people who build the product.

Who this is for

Sound familiar?

  • A new firm starting from a personal email address and a cell phone.
  • A firm that has grown past a shared inbox and a desk phone.
  • A firm that wants to know it would pass a client's security questionnaire.

What is included

The scope of the engagement.

Domain and email

Your domain registered or transferred into your name, professional email for everyone, shared addresses for intake and billing, and the email security records that keep your mail out of spam folders.

Phones and reception

A business phone system with a main number, extensions, voicemail to email, and texting, or a virtual reception service that answers in your firm's name and takes intake.

Documents, storage, and backup

Firm file storage with the folder structure a law practice needs, sharing settings that default to private, and automatic backup of everything that matters.

Security basics

Two-factor authentication everywhere, a password manager for the firm, device encryption, and a short written policy you can hand to a client who asks.

How it works

From consultation to handoff.

  1. Consultation

What you have, what you are using personally that should become the firm's, and how clients reach you today.

  2. Plan and quote

A flat setup fee with the monthly subscription costs of each service listed, so there are no hidden recurring charges.

  3. Setup

Accounts created in the firm's name, devices configured, numbers ported, and mail migrated if needed.

  4. Handoff

A one-page map of every account, where it lives, who administers it, and what it costs, plus the written security policy.

On the platform

Where this hands off into BetterDocket.

The software is a separate subscription and never required. Firms that use it get these handoffs out of the box.

Client messaging

One thread per matter between the Firm and each Client, attached to the Case instead of scattered across inbox, text, and voicemail.

See the feature

Client portal

One private page where each client sees where the case stands, what comes next, and what you need from them.

Speak with an expert

Talk with us to get started.

A short consultation, then a written scope and a number. No retainer, no long-term contract, and nothing starts until you approve it.

BetterDocket is not a law firm, a CPA firm, or an insurance agency, and nothing on this page is legal, tax, or insurance advice. Where a service requires a licensed professional, that work is performed by a licensed professional in your state, either on our team or through a partner we vet. Every engagement is scoped and quoted after a consultation.

Questions.

Do I have to use particular products?

No. We default to mainstream, widely supported services and will work with what you already have where it is sound. Everything is set up in your name so you are never locked to us.

Does this include BetterDocket?

BetterDocket is a separate subscription and is not required for any service. If you use it, we set up your Firm, invite your team, and connect your email branding as part of the handoff.

Do you build the website too?

Yes, as a separate service, and the two are usually scoped together: domain and email first, then the site on the same domain. The website service page describes what that includes.

Can you port my existing phone number?

Usually, including a cell number you have been using for the firm. Porting takes a few business days and we manage it so clients never get a dead line.

Who actually does the work?

The BetterDocket team delivers most of this work directly: the technology, web, and search work by the engineers who build the product, and the bookkeeping, tax, and payroll work by the CPA on our team. When a service requires a license we do not hold, or our team is at capacity, we bring in a vetted partner and stay your single point of contact.

What does it cost?

Every engagement is scoped and quoted after a short consultation, and most are flat fees so you know the number before work starts. Ongoing services, such as bookkeeping or SEO, are quoted monthly with no long-term contract.
