Services · Starting the firm

Covered before the first engagement letter.

Professional liability insurance is required or expected in most states, several bars ask you to disclose whether you carry it, and the application asks questions a first-time buyer has never considered: claims-made versus occurrence, prior acts, tail coverage, limits per claim and aggregate. We are building this service with a licensed broker partner and are not placing coverage yet. Until it opens, this page explains what you are buying, and you can tell us you are interested so you hear first when it is available.

Who this is for

Sound familiar?

  • A new firm that needs coverage in place before opening.
  • A lawyer leaving a firm who needs to understand prior-acts and tail coverage.
  • A firm whose renewal just went up and wants it shopped.

What it will include

The scope we are building.

Needs review

Practice areas, revenue, number of lawyers, and your state's requirements, translated into the limits and features that actually matter for a firm like yours.

Application prepared

The application completed with you, with the prior-acts and claims history questions explained before you answer them.

Quotes compared

Quotes from carriers that write small-firm policies, compared side by side on price, limits, deductible, and the exclusions that differ between them.

Bound and calendared

Coverage bound before you need it, the certificate filed with your bar where required, and the renewal on your calendar well ahead of time.

How it works

How it will work.

  1. Consultation

Your practice, your state, your timeline, and any prior coverage.

  2. Application

We prepare it with you; the licensed broker submits it to the carriers.

  3. Compare and choose

A one-page comparison of the quotes, with the differences that matter explained.

  4. Bind and file

Coverage bound, certificate delivered, bar disclosure handled where it applies.

We are not taking this on yet. Leave your details and we will let you know when it opens, with no obligation.

BetterDocket is not a law firm, a CPA firm, or an insurance agency, and nothing on this page is legal, tax, or insurance advice. Where a service requires a licensed professional, that work is performed by a licensed professional in your state, either on our team or through a partner we vet. Every engagement is scoped and quoted after a consultation.

Questions.

When will this be available?

When we have a licensed broker partner who writes small-firm policies in the states our firms are in. Leave your details and we will tell you when it opens, with no obligation.

Is BetterDocket an insurance broker?

No, and we are not placing coverage yet. When the service opens, quotes will be obtained and coverage bound by a licensed insurance broker in your state. We will prepare you, explain the options, and stay your point of contact.

What should I do in the meantime?

Start with your state bar. Many run or endorse a lawyers' professional liability program, and most list carriers that write small-firm policies. A direct application typically takes a few weeks, so start before your opening date.

What limits do I need?

It depends on your practice areas, your clients, and your state's rules. The needs review will cover the common ranges for firms like yours and what each step up costs, so you can decide with the numbers in front of you.

What is tail coverage?

Coverage for claims made after a claims-made policy ends, for work done while it was in force. It matters when you leave a firm, change carriers, or retire.
