Client portal help

Message your firm

The Messages tab is how you reach your firm about your case. The whole conversation stays attached to the case — so an answer from March is still there in September, instead of buried in an email thread.

Send a message

Type in the box at the bottom and press Send. On a computer, Enter sends and Shift+Enter starts a new line; on a phone, Enter starts a new line and you tap Send. Messages can't include file attachments — when your firm needs a document from you, they'll send a document request, which has its own upload flow.

Know it was seen

Under each message you send, the portal shows "Firm read" with a time once someone at the firm has read it, or "Not read by firm yet" until then. So there's no wondering whether the question landed — you can see it.

If someone else is on your case

Some cases have more than one client — spouses, business partners, family members. You share one conversation with the firm: their messages appear labeled "Another client", and everyone on the case can read the thread. Anything you'd rather discuss privately, raise with your firm directly by phone or in person.

Sending without a signal

If you're offline, you can still write — the portal shows "your message will send when you reconnect," and it does, automatically, in order. Nothing you write gets lost to a dead spot.

The right channel for the right question

Messages go to your law firm and are for your case. If something about the portal itself is broken — you can't sign in, a page won't load — that goes to the BetterDocket team instead, through Help & feedback or support@betterdocket.com. More on that in Get help when something's wrong.
